Ceramic Balls
Ceramic balls can be produced from several ceramic materials, but the balls offered here are made from silicon nitride. Silicon nitride balls outperform other ceramic options as well as standard steel balls, and when combined with high-quality bearing rings, they provide numerous advantages over conventional steel bearings.
All ceramic balls are manufactured from premium silicon nitride and feature the highest possible surface finish and roundness. The quality of the balls ultimately determines the performance and service life of a bearing. CeramicSpeed Balls offer exceptional impact strength, smoothness, roundness, and low brittleness, and have been proven superior to both other ceramic balls and standard steel balls.
Ceramic balls are 15% harder, can withstand loads that are 99% higher, and are more than twice as smooth as other ceramic balls typically available on the market. Ceramic balls can be made from various materials, but the best choice—and the one used in these bearings—is silicon nitride (Si3N4).
Ceramic balls are superior to steel balls in all measurable physical properties. This delivers multiple benefits for the bearing: the increased hardness of the ball reduces the contact area between the ball and the raceway, resulting in lower friction, higher potential speeds, and reduced energy loss. The hardness and extremely smooth surface also make the balls far more durable than steel balls. In addition, ceramic balls are significantly lighter than steel balls, which lowers the centrifugal load on the raceway as the bearing rotates. Wear is therefore greatly reduced, keeping the bearing in optimal condition for longer. As an added benefit, the bearing can operate at much higher RPMs—up to 50% higher—making it possible to use long-life bearings in demanding high-speed applications such as machine tool spindles and turbomachinery.
Another key advantage of ceramic balls over steel balls is their low coefficient of friction, which significantly reduces the need for lubrication.

When standard bearing steel is not sufficient, AISI 440C or SUS 316L stainless steel can be used as alternative materials.
AISI 440C can be hardened and provides a very high load-carrying capacity. SUS 316L, by contrast, is much softer and offers only about 10–15% of this load capacity. 316L is typically used in extremely harsh, contaminated environments and is chemically inert to many types of solvents.
